SC1 generic energy recovery watermaker preservative

I’m having trouble getting this stuff in the UK to pack in my suitcase and I don’t want to use propylene glycol as it’s too heavy. Is there a generic alternative or better, is there a home blend I can use or mix that will do the job? I realise I can’t use sodium meta bisulphate.

What is in it by the way?

Have you tried the UK dealer? They should have it.

Re: SC1 generic energy recovery watermaker preservative

Based on the limited data available, it is most likely just boric acid, but VERY expensive boric acid. I used plain boric acid on my Spectra and it worked fine, but that was some time ago, and they might have changed the formulation since then. Use at your own risk. Obviously Spectra will not support the use of off brand chemicals…

You can confirm by taking a small sample and putting it in a gas flame. If the flame turns bright green, the presence of boron is confirmed.

Spectra has historically been very cagey about keeping the ingredients of these products as secure trade secrets. That kind of points to them actually being very inexpensive materials easily available.

The Material Safety Data sheet is basically all you have to go on…

Re: SC1 generic energy recovery watermaker preservative

I've found a company selling Schenker Cleaning Product SC 1 for 17 euros, but the catch is 25 euros postage. But I increased the quantity to 6 and the postage is still 25 euros, maybe if there is enough interest here we could combine an order?

mar-nautic.com/schenker-cleaning-product-sc-1

I have already complained to them about their postage costs and they agree its too high and are looking for alternatives.

The shop you mention lists a MSDS, identifying this as a desalinator descalant called Flocon MC67 by Italmatch.

Ingredients:
sulphamidic acid 10 - 25%
citric acid 2,5-10%

Cost of that on ebay is maybe 0,50 Euro per SC1 bottle.

Well spotted. But as a non-chemist I'm not confident that's all there is to it? What are the remaining 65% of contents and is it the case that only the potentially harmful contents have to be listed, so might there be something else, non-potentially harmful you need in there that is not listed?

Not a chemical expert either.
The missing ingredients could be a lot of things.
Maybe just unimportant "filler" to make the bottle look bigger? Maybe some additives to make the solution a better cleaning agent.

All I know is that other pickling chemicals are often just plain acids, too. My totally uneducated guess is that a mix of sulphamidic & critric acid should be enough to pickle the watermaker and not cause damage to the watermaker.

Maybe just ask Italmatch what their smallest container costs.

I decided to just swallow the cost of the SC1. I save the money on the filters, these fit the ZEN30 well and cost a tiny fraction:

BTW: I ordered at the mar-nautic shop mentioned above.
Shipping cost 15Euro to Germany.

They are based in Liechtenstein and are shipping from Switzerland, so prices are ex-VAT. FedEx collect the VAT and charge a 6 Euro handling fee on top.

Total cost for 4 bottles of SC1 = 101,87 € (DDP)

Schenker make some fine machines and have a good aftersales service but their consumables are a total 100% ripoff. Just like anyone else in the yachting industry.
