I’ve had good luck with Flojet. I’m just now replacing my 18 year old model 4125-114.

Basically positive displacement pumps can self prime and centrifugal pumps cannot. Positive displacement pumps include piston, diaphragm, vane, lobe, etc. Some are better at pulling a vacuum on the suction side (and thus self priming) than others. Tight clearances are essential to this abillity.
