Raw Water Strainer Identification

Hello All, I need to replace the cover gasket for this sea water strainer on a 1985 Pearson 303 sailboat.

Any idea on the make and model of this strainer?

Any help is appreciated.

It looks like a Perko sea strainer.

Looks like an old Perko. Would need to measure the inlet/outlets to tell if it was a 1/2 or 3/4".
We have a rebuilt 3/4" for sale if you need a different one. PM me to discuss.

Nice name, Captyknot.

This is a good situation for learning to cut your own gaskets. In this case you need a fairly soft low pressure gasket with lots of compression, so thick gasket paper or thin rubber would work. Remove the lid, place the paper over the strainer, and cut the paper with the round end of a ball peen hammer tapping along the sharp edges. It only takes a little practice.

Actually, it looks like you could simply outline the lid on the paper and cut with scissors for this one, but you might as well learn how to do it while you've got the opportunity.

Then carry a collection of thicknesses of paper, and do your own low pressure gaskets when you need them. It's mildly liberating.

The original gaskets in the lid and bowl in the older strainer are cork, while the newer ones use rubber. A soft low pressure material should work, but Perko suggests to use cork in the older models.

I agree making your gaskets is easy and good to know how to do. The top gasket for the strainer is just a circle cut out w/a 1.75" id and a 2" od. Use a compass to draw out your gasket then cut out w/scissors.

Re: Raw Water Strainer Identification

Thank you all for the good information. I'll look at the Perko site and get some recommended gasket material.

Thanks again!
