Re: Raritan Electro Scan

Peg, you are the expert, so I will defer to you...

But how many people would consider a bucket a "receptacle intended to receive or retain body waste"? I mean, unless they don't have any other place to put it.

And is what comes up considered bodily waste? I mean, if you are drunk, it's certainly a waste of alcohol, but is it illegal to be sick in a bucket and dump it overboard? When I was growing up and racing sailboats, my father had a "pee cup" on our Lightning. Is that illegal too?

Seriously, I'm just joking about this... I get your point.

It does seem pointless that we treat sterile urine in a Pursasan or Electrasan, and it's OK to dump overboard (in non-NDZ), but not if it's not treated.

Re: Raritan Electro Scan

I have used the Lectra Scan for a few years and it works just great. It uses very little electricity and discharges nothing that I can even see. The discharge is sterilized also. Before that I had a Micro-Phor (made in Willits CA) which uses no electricity, just chlorine pool tablets, and has no motors, just gravity. The Micro-Phor is in the same treatment class as the Lectra-Scan.

Re: Raritan Electro Scan

I have been using this system for 12 years with good results until recently. I have been having trouble with the controller while in a high heat / summer location with hot engine room temps. It appears the potting material is melting. IT was 110* here this summer, add to that eng room temps and .....

had one for 8 years and no prob;ems , you just have to ensure that it gets the correct DC voltage , everything is pretty simple , just need a small 10 or 20 gal holding tank from which you can dump directly over board , you actually don't even need the small holding tank as you can pipe it so that it dumps the treated effluent overboard , I put in a holding tank because at most marinas they don't allow you to pump even treated effluent overboard

Re: Raritan Electro Scan

I have used one for 16 yrs. It will likely need service every five years. Otherwise run muriatic a it throught it every six months. Most locations you will need to add salt to process fecal matter, depending on salinity and temp of local sea water. Just keep a canister next to potty and prime the bowl with a 1/4 cup table salt.

Do you do that with the boat in the water or out? We have one on our Irwin that a PO installed and it works fine for now, but I read the manual and it calls for cleaning every 6 months or so.

In the water...and it's actually very easy. Just follow the directions in the owners manual.

Re: Raritan Electro Scan

Just got off the phone with Raritan Engineering and they confirmed the stuff I can get from HD or some other big box store is, indeed the muriatic acid needed to clean the system.

Re: Raritan Electro Scan

Be sure to CAREFULLY READ and then follow ALL the safe handling directions on the acid bottle AND the directions for use in the Raritan owners manual!
