I will see if I can find videos of the 35E to hear the sound.

I have two water tanks onboard. 53g and 87g.

My plan is to eventually convert the 53g to a fuel tank and connect the watermaker to the 87g tank.

Re: Quietest DC watermaker on the market?

I guess I should have written a little more.
Our watermaker is quiet. It does not have a high pressure pump. It works on a different principle of building the pressure.
I run it every day and cannot hear it at all from the cockpit.
In the cabin you can hear it running but it is not loud and I can carry on a normal conversation while it is running.
I really like it for this reason. It draws 20 amps, but I do not care as I have plenty of solar to run it.
I will see if I can find a video clip of it running. I think I have a short video somewhere.

Here ya go https://www.spectrawatermakers.com/u...23-ventura-150
Good unit relatively quiet and will meet your 5 gpd with about an hours operation each day. So my recomend would be to use qbout half of your tankage. Then run the unit to refill ( but not less than once a week. ) to avoid need to pickle)

Re: Quietest DC watermaker on the market?

My view is that once you have a watermaker, the size of the water tank becomes less important. Similar to batteries - the capacity is not that important, the generation capability is what matters. I think it is a great idea to carry more fuel and less water.

Having said that, it does not seem right to have a 90 gallon water tank and a 1.5 gph watermaker. If noise is your primary concern, then get a large 20 gph watermaker that you can run for 15 min every other day.

We ran a "little wonder" that had that output, much simpler than the spectra and fairly quiet.

Give em a look 😉

Re: Quietest DC watermaker on the market?

Yes, that is what it is, a 12vdc unit. Was a little pricey, around 2600 if memory serves but was easy to install myself and really worked.

A pur (katydin) game with the boat and it was a toy compared to this.

We used it daily for years with no hiccups. Simple single piston design. It does have a little "rhythm" when running and comforting to hear.

One hour and you have your 5-6 gallons for the day ;-)

Ok k so about the same as the spectra I linked to but with proprietary parts.

Re: Quietest DC watermaker on the market?

The Specra watermakers are very quiet with their Clark high pressure pumps; its the infeed pumps that make the noise...

I am not aware of any quiet infeed pumps, but will say with ours mounted in an insulated compartment, we have to strain to hear if it is running- even when everything is quiet.

I suspect you will like whatever brand water maker you get. If it makes water quickly enough, you won't have to run it when you desire quiet... [e.g., Ours runs 6-10 hours/once or twice a week- typically on laundry days- to keep us more than happy...]

Best wishes finding what works best for you.

Cheers! Bill

Re: Quietest DC watermaker on the market?

Hi all, I have Italian WM Schenker 30l/H for last 7 years. It is MHO very quite and draws only up to 6Amps. Has a diaphragm pump, modular system and energy recovery system. I installed (very easy to install) it in above skipper bed and no any sound isolation. When I am sailing I can barely hear that it is working in saloon.

Re: Quietest DC watermaker on the market?

Dang! 8500!!!

https://www.westmarine.com/buy/racor...-amp--12791703

Back in 2001 bit cheaper! Village Marine was sold to Parker and I lost touch from there.

What I will say is this unit is SIMPLE (read reliable) compared to the spectra.

I decided long ago that next boat I'm building my own watermaker, it will be 220v and a zillion gallons per hour :-)

All the best!

Re: Quietest DC watermaker on the market?

we have a spectra 200T mounted under the bunk (mounted it myself - no big issues).

It's pretty quiet - I've gone to sleep in the bunk above while it is running.

What do you consider "quiet"? Do you mean not being able to hear it at all (silent?)
Nothing like that exists to my knowledge.

We have 2 x 170 liter tanks - run our spectra every 3rd day and flush it, but we never pickle it.

We don't worry about letting it run unattended - we just have to be back before the tank is full

Our books have gotten 5 star reviews on Amazon. Several readers have written "I never thought I would go on a circumnavigation, but when I read these books, I was right there in the cockpit with Vinni and Carsten"

2600 new?

That does not sound right to me. A new Katadyn 40E is $4000

Run your watermaker through the refrigerator to keep it cool

Hi Ken, I had a Katadyn 80e on the last boat, I would run it daily or every second day as it only made 14l/hr. I now have a rainman, I run it one per week for 3hrs as it produces 120-140l/hr, I fresh water flush it after every use as its nothing to make 10 liters. So far using it once per week is fine,.no issues. If I was to leave it longer the manufacturer suggests to pickle it.
