Propane Tank Value Upgrade

I haven't done a lot of cooking on board - or rather I have but propane seems to last forever. I'm still on the first of two tanks I filled up in 2004, shortly before the conversion from industrial to consumer propane tank valves.

Are people now using those connectors with the big plastic knobs and playskool sized threads like on the home BBQ's? Anybody recall what it cost to convert their old tanks? Planning to take off long distance in a year (on a definite countdown) and wondering if I need to convert them.

Re: Propane tank value upgrade

You simply can't get the old style tanks filled in the USA, but you probably can in many places outside of the USA. Luckily, the new style valve also takes the old style fill connector. Some parts of the world have completely different connectors and will require an adaptor, but throughout most of the Caribbean you can get tanks filled at reasonable intervals. I investigated getting the valves changed when the law changed and it was more expensive than getting new tanks, so I bought new tanks.

Re: Propane tank value upgrade

We had the valves replaced in our two 20lb aluminum tanks at a local propane company. The cost was ~$100 USD total including the valves, the necessary pressure tests to renew the certification and a fill of propane.

Re: Propane Tank Value Upgrade

After searching for a year for 10 lb replacement tanks that would fit our propane locker, we found Camcarb in Toronto who re-valved, inspected and filled our tanks - 58 dollars Cdn each, but well worth it for another ten years service! And they can do it while you wait - priceless...
