Polyiso almost killed me

Ok no laughing ,

This was very scary . I was insulating my freezer with 1 inch polyiso insulation and so to be very careful and cutting and tapping the edges. Not an easy task , takes lots of layers to make up the desired R value of 30 .

Damn did I not get stuck in the hole !!!!!, Holly #@#! im gonna die! The hole I was working in is only 17inches from corner to corner ARRGH.

Well as you can tell I got out, a little black and blue, but learned my lesson. One arm in at a time and the other to push myself out .

Just thought I would share that ,, BE CAREFUL OUT THERE

Boat Yoga can be life threatening. There have been a couple of times that I've myself into a position where I feared wouldn't be able to get myself out of. Made worse by shoulders injured in my mountain biking days.

Thought I was going to die in a cockpit locker last summer.
Climbed inside curled into position to reach the back of a breaker panel and my hip cramped!
Not enough room to stretch it out, couldn't get out with the hip siezed solid.

I got a little claustrophobic stuck in a cockpit locker once while working on the boat.

While installing a HAM radio antenna tuner, I had to go through a very small hatch.
I took all the necessary tools and my cellphone with me and am glad I did.

We lost a club member this way the year before last. Very sad, and a real eye opener for me. I would never have considered it a risk.

No booze, just pure bad luck getting trapped in some horrible position in the boat, while on the maintenance pontoon. Really leaves me feeling cold.

I got a bit of a scare helping a mate change his oil filter on a Duncanson 36. That engine bay is a nightmare. I climbed in, and I thought they were going to have to cut out the cockpit sole to get me out. At least he is an A & E quack, so he could probably have kept me alive till I lost enough weight to get back out again.

Wow, never heard of anyone actually dying this way, but I've pondered that possibility just about every time I squeeze myself into some tight compartment. GILow, can you elaborate on how it happened? I'd like to try to avoid doing the same thing.

My biggest fear is that some emergency will come up and I won't have the time to extricate myself. I have to force myself to go slow and not panic if I get hung up trying to get out, even at the best of times. I always have my cell phone within reach, too!

I am afraid I don't know all the details. All I know was that the boat was moored at our maintenance pontoon, and had been for a few days. People only moor there for major work that might involve making a mess, it is both an EPA regulation as well as a courtesy to other boat owners. I understand the deceased became trapped in a tight access point, though I am also under the impression that the actual cause of death was technically some form of heart failure, brought about by becoming trapped.

I usually have my cell phone close as well . The last time I thought I may get caught and need it was when I was trying to get the back bolt in place on the generator install . I had it precariously balanced on a bottle jack with my arm underneath it . Survived that. But when I found myself stuck in the freezer I didn't have it in there with me and the air was running out fast . Panic tried to set in so I had to calm myself and slowly inch my shoulders out .
Scary to think people have died like that , this is dangerous stuff !

When I was younger I always had my daughter stand in the yard and "help" me with stringing Christmas lights. One day she asked "What really is my job?" I told her that her only function was to call 911 when I fall off the ladder.

This thread is a scary read and I have been wedged into an "L" shape under a settee and felt panic rising when I tried to back out. Amazing how you can go forward into places you can't seem to back out of.

Now I realize I need that safety net of someone else right there with me when doing such things. Cells are a good idea but I know my luck; dead battery or dropped beyond reach just when I need it most!

This is exactly why I enjoy having a 360 degree access engine bay and ease of access. Yes, I "sacrifice" living space and we aren't really equipped to have double bed cabins, but then I don't have to contort myself to get at things.

I came close in Sri Lanka--crawled into a cockpit locker to do some work, and the hatch fell and latched me in on a really hot day. The space was about 6 ft long, 3 ft wide and 14 inches high. Lost my voice calling for help, but finally felt an abalone iron I could use to pry and break the latch.
