I have an old Alder Barbour DCM-12 that says 1996 on the side of it. It still runs on R12 refrigerant. I think I need to get it topped up/recharged as the evaporator is sweating on the output side and the frost line is coming down on the evaporator. I found a tech that has some R12 while in
Mexico, but I do not believe that is a long term solution since the gas is bad for the
environment and can be difficult to find. I think the existing
compressor is not a variable speed one, so I'm wondering if replacing the unit with a newer model that runs off R134a and has variable speed
compressor would provide some efficiency improvements.
