Hi all,

we have (what lookks like) a Johnson 2200 GPH electric pump, wired to a separate float switch. The pump sometimes gets stuck (released with a gentle whack with something like a plastic winch handle). That seems to free it.

It should also be noted that it does not sit on the strainer (could be clogged).

Well, after the last 'whack', the pump certainly works, the little wheel under it turns and it makes all the right noises - but it doesn't actually pump the water out.... it would just keep running.

I have confirmed the float switch is fine, by manually pumping out the bilge..... the electric pump does not come on.

As I have mentioned, the little black wheel (is it an impeller??) is spinning nicely, but not drawing water.

Are there any suggestions out there, before I go through the difficult chore of removing the pump and getting it assessed.

As part of that, is there any sense in undoing the 6 screws on top, removing the motor, checking things out, then puting the motor back in?

Sounds like toast to me and I personally wouldnt want an iffy bilge pump, but taking something like that apart is never wrong in my opinion.

It may be toast, but may not. After viewing a West Marine interview with a Johnson Rep on U Tube last night (which shows the motor section being separated from the housing), went down to the boat tonight, pulled the pump apart - and found a curled up piece of electrical tape in the impeller area. Just maybe the solution is at hand.

Ran out of time to check, but hope to do so in the next few days.
