Installing Water Heater on Perkins 4-236

I'm about to install a hot water heater. Looking at the 4-236, the fresh water system uses what looks like a 1.25 diameter metal hose with two elbows.... a little hard to tap into for the heating coil in the heater. There is a pipe plug on top of the fresh water pump and one on the heat exchanger jacket. Any reason I cant just use those two locations for my hot water hoses going to the water heater coil?

Cheechako, I don't see any reason why not - if I'm not mistaken, the Perkins 4-108 in a previous boat of mine had the hot water run off from the water pump to the water heater. Having said that, its been a long time since I installed a new water heater, but as I recall you may need to install a vented 'loop' between the diesel and the heater in order to avoid air locks.

They say the heater should be installed below the level of the engine cooling to avoid air locks.... or you need to bleed it out somehow. None of my boats in the past have had a loop.... but it might be a good idea.
