Ok, totally love the guy who owned the boat before the guy I owned the boat. And love to the guy who owned the boat before I owned the boat for leaving it alone.

Found this in the burried amongst the spares under the rear berth amongst the refrigeration stuff...

Every time I turn around I find some new toy. I don't think I'll be able to afford refrigeration this year, but it's nice to know all the necessary tools are here for when I can...

All I found were two garbage bags full of old ropes and Irish pennants.

the po had died before i bought the boat from the widow.

he left me ten five gallon jugs of diesel on the foredeck (sent them to the reclaimer), hundreds of feet of very old 3/4" nylon rode stuffed up behind the steering gear (threw it out), every old broken fresh water pump that had ever been installed on the boat (four), and a wonderful shipmate propane stove/oven that was entirely covered in cooking grease (we spent two days removing it, cleaning it, and reinstalling it).

he also left me a complete set of engine manuals, charts for the east coast usa and bahamas, an old mounted gps which quickly burned out, a final generation loran (gave it away), a beautiful kerosene anchor light (now hangs in my porch) and the bills for all the work he had done on the boat in the previous ten years (valuable).

we spent a week cleaning the boat out, and a month of other work before i felt the boat was ready to be moved to a yard where we could actually begin really working on it....

I was lucky with not one, but two awesome previous owners. Between the two of them they owned the boat for a little over 10 years. Both of them maintenance maniacs and excellent people.

My wife and I spent a few days digging through lockers and found all sorts of goodies and spares. For example: full set of fids, two survival suits, enough charts to sail up and down the east coast from Newfoundland to Florida.

So here's my public (though somewhat delayed) expression of appreciation to both of them. Thanks a lot, guys!

Among other things, I've got all boat manuals, and 4 remotes for 3 devices ... and non of the remotes operates one of them.

Also, found the spare boat keys inside the helm seat pedestal when feeling for the wires thru the access hatch ... saved me a lot of headache as the keys are special order.

I have to send posthumous thanks to my boat's original owner who ordered almost every available option for my boat, tall rig included.
He raced out of Oregon.
Although I have never been able to discern the real story, somehow he did manage to drop the mast for which I am still paying in the form of a deck leak!
He had to sell it because of declining health after only 4 years.

The second owner only owned it for a year, cruised it to Mexico.
There was no further damage other than UV, and I've owned it ever since.

Even though there was a recent survey,after an initial look around and a test sail (in Mexico) we purchased it without a new survey.
We sold off the survival suits and a few things, but haven't had any surprises of any kind.

IMHO, the boat is in better shape than ever.

Our boat's hull, deck, bulkheads and scantlings were professionally built by a reputable yard, with the official approval / blessing of the designer. The fit-out, however, was completed by the original owner: He was, apparently a builder, but patently obviously he wasn't a shipwright... Grrrr.
