Housing for Watermaker Membranes

Hello People!

Howe are you? I am fine.

I like to know if someone can give me information about where to buy affordable pressure housings or vessels for 2540 membranes.
Like DOW sw-2540. The system works on 850 psi or 58bar.
We have a small budget...

Thanks, Mark.

Thanks for the reply's

I'am checking the options. AmericanRO seems to have reasonable prices.
There are big price differences for the products i see. Spending more money don't have to bring better quality in my experience.

regards, Mark

There are plenty of membrane vessels out there to choose from and the prices will vary. But make no mistake there are quality differences. Application makes a difference especially in DIY watermakers. If you price shop only you lay your money down and cross your fingers. Good Luck in whatever you decide. But If you need advice on a build let me know, I've done more than most.

Hi Tellie,

Thanks for your advice. I am not building one but i have a HEM25 serie 800.
Standard it comes with 3 times 2,5x40 at 850 psi.
I bought the machine used and in very good shape but without the vessels and membranes.
Now we are in the Cabo Verde, from the Netherlands, and we like to start using the water maker.
I have a good offer from the Netherlands. Dow filmtec per stuck sw30-2540 for €.157,- ex tax 21% They offer also vessels for 120 € I have not yet specifications from the vessels. It comes from Lenntech.com.

Re: Housing for Watermaker Membranes

If it's a HEM 800gpd it should only need two membranes to work. Are you sure it calls for a third membrane? Those are good prices considering the Euro. (Gotta kid in college in Austria. I know the pain)

Don't try DIY water makers. They have recently gone to carbon fiber pressure vessels and they don't work. I tried them and have gone through 4 without any of them holding water. One failed under boost pump pressure. The other three all failed withing 30 seconds of turning on the the high pressure pump. Two had mutiple weeping leaks coming through the sides of the vessels. The third had a couple of weeping leaks plus one that shot high pressure sea water mist 3 feet all throgh the sides of the vessels. They literally don't hold water.

Holy Smokes Bill...sorry to hear about your experience.

I've helped a few cruisers in your same situation replace their leaky PVs.
Their's leaked at the end plug assembly where the carbon fiber end was not smooth or machined clean enough for the O-fings to seal. Are you saying yours actually leaked through the Carbon Fiber housing material and not just at the vessel/end plug mating surface?

Is the same true with membranes? I'll be needing one for the Spectra unit I picked up.

There are companies out there that roll their own membranes but many water makers like Spectra, Cruise RO, etc use the standard DOW Chemical Membranes (or Koch).

A good way to be sure of what you are ordering/getting is to ASK who makes the membrane. Dow Filtech membranes are the Gold Standard. We sell the SM30-2540 for $187 which depending on the type of Spectra you have is a direct replacement. If your Spectra need a SM30-2521 (21" membrane) then you can buy one here for $165 from Applied Membranes in Viata, Ca...just down the road from us.

That is correct. They leaked from the end caps some as well and I agree they weren't smooth enough, but I might have been able to work on that, but there's no fixing the leaks through the sides. Like I said one failed under boost pump pressure which is maybe 50 PSI. At some point I'll publish a full account of my experience as a product review, but at the moment things are not fully resolved.

Yes there is a difference in membranes. For the most part in plunger pump type watermakers it doesn't make much difference. But because of the differences in a Spectra you need a Filmtec for your watermaker. You won't be happy with the others. If you need one let me know. As a distributor I can, for CF members, get them at a better price than others.
