Hose barb size

How can I tell the size of a hose barb. When I measured it the widest point of the ribs was 3/8 but it seems like the tubing would need to be smaller to fit on to the barn. Like maybe 5/16 or 1/4.

If you match the hose barb size to the hose size, you'll get a good fit. Barb sizes always refer to the OUTER diameter, hose sizes always refer to the INNER diameter. Warming the hose a bit (if you use a heat gun, be careful not to melt the hose!) and lubricating both the inside of the hose and the outside of the barb with dishwashing liquid will make it easier to put it on the barb. Don't use any grease...you'll have a permanently slippery connection.

3/8 hose should be the right size. When you tighten the clamp it will push the hose into the barbs.
