High clean water level in toilet bowl

Hello,
I know this was discussed before and I know Peghall came out the clear winner in the knowledge bit!
I have the same problem. I am paranoid about through valves, especially on toilets so I keep all valves closed unless they are in use. Nevertheless the water level sits very high. Obviously it finds its level before I close the through hulls. Any ideas?

Re: High clean water level in toilet bowl

Perhaps depends on type of toilet.

On my Jabsco with a joker valve, it is not normal. Seeing this means (i) something is stuck in joker valve flap, holding it a little open, or (ii) joker valve needs replacing.

Thanks. That's what I was thinking but reading the last goaround about this I believe that if it's clean water, ie seawater then it's not the joker valve.

No, clean seawater can definitely be due to fault with joker valve.

(I see it every 1-2 years with our head. Always carry 1-2 new joker valves.)

I should note that we flush 20-30 times to remove any urine (and the other stuff[emoji15]) from all hoses (to reduce scale), so clean sea water would be in the outlet hoses, and thus able to come back via faulty joker valve.

Ok. Yes, me too. I'll change the valve, see how that does. Thanks

Re: High clean water level in toilet bowl

What's the make/model of your toilet? Sea water toilet or designed to use pressurized fresh water?

Re: High clean water level in toilet bowl

Hi Peggie,

It's a LAVAC TAYLOR. It's seawater. A very simple design. The pump is mounted above the toilet and is really like a standard WHALEGUSHER type bilge pump. It works well. As I said. I keep all seacocks closed at all times unless they're actually in service.

Re: High clean water level in toilet bowl

I suspect your problem may be due to the lack of a high loop in the intake line. See this on page 14 of the owners manual:

4. Establish a position for the pump
where the pump inlet is no lower
than the bowl top.
5. Bolt or screw the pump in position
using 6mm (¼“) diameter bolts
or screws ensuring that the flow
arrow on the pump is vertically up
or certainly not more than 45° from
the vertical.
IF THE PUMP IS MOUNTED IN
ANY OTHER WAY THE INSTALLATION
WILL BE INEFFICIENT IN
OPERATION AS THE INLET VALVE
CANNOT SEAL EFFECTIVELY.
6. Cut the 38mm (1½“) diameter
outlet hose to the lengths required.
Be sure to allow enough hose from
the top of the pump to take the loop
above the waterline at maximum
heel of the boat.
For motor vessels
this is high enough at maximum
angle of roll. Attach the two cut
lengths of hose from the bowl to the
bottom (inlet) of the pump and from
the top of the pump (outlet) to the
outlet seacock.
7. Connect the 19mm (¾“) bore
inlet hose to the bowl inlet, having
allowed for a loop similar to the outlet
(see point 6) and attach the inlet
hose to the inlet seacock.

I'm unable to find a link to the owners manual (I've asked Blake to provide one), but I do have a PDF in my files that I'll be glad to send you. Stand by for a private message from me.

Re: High clean water level in toilet bowl

I think you're right Peggie. I'm going down to the boat tomorrow hopefully and I'll check it. I'll also look at the flow angle.
I can't thank you enough for the time you have taken to look at this. I really appreciate it.
I'll let you know how I get on.
Thanks again
John

Re: High clean water level in toilet bowl

Just a thought Peggie. If I find that the loop looks adequate, would it help if I were to fit a loop vent to the 3/4" line?
Thanks

Re: High clean water level in toilet bowl

If yours were a "normal" toilet, you'd definitely want a vented loop...and it would belong between the pump and the bowl. But because a vented loop could prevent the Lavac from achieving vacuum, I'd defer to the instructions in the owners manual before installing one.

Re: High clean water level in toilet bowl

Might also be the inlet water syphoning in, so simply raising it may not necessarily solve the problem. Many installations recommend having a high loop on the inlet pipe with an antisyphon device fitted at the top of the loop. Would be interested to hear how you solve it. Good luck.
