Forward Osmosis for Fresh Water Source ?

Has anyone considered using forward osmosis for a significant water source? I am thinking of a device which slowly drips salt water in one side, and sugar on the other, while dripping sugar water out, which accumulates. Any designs for a practical system which can work for months or years at a time?

I feel like there is some clever way to design a system to make it work well without much waste. Maybe having a very low power electric fan to agitate the water, or some kind of deflection vanes in the solution to optimize it.
