Deck Washing

I want to be able to wash my 34' yacht down while its on the mooring. I've been thinking of using a jet wash, but now thinking of looking at using a wash down pump.
Do these provide enough pressure to wash of the bird poo etc?

Re: Deck Washing

A 12V deck wash pump is good, (the more capacity the better + $) and you can plumb it for both fresh and salt water. Just get a fine jet nozzle or a "turbo" type nozzle to fit to the hose. If you use a pressure washer like a Karcher you run the risk of the high pressured water penetrating seals and deck fittings and causing under deck moisture issues. Baked on bird poo is best removed with a deck brush and detergent then hosed.

Depends on what pressure you have at home. We found that the the 5 gallon per minute self priming diaphragm pumps provide ample pressure with a brass jet nozzle. You could go up to an impeller type pump at 7 gpm+. A garden hose may be anywhere from 5gpm to 25gpm+.

Re: Deck Washing

Depending if you are using salt or freshwater and if that matters, I have a random little thing I do.

If I have a boat without a deck wash down, I just go to the hardware store and buy a fairly large submersible pump. I hook a garden hose up to this pump and drop it overboard. Works well for an anchor wash down if you don’t have one as well.

Works especially well if you are in fresh or fairly fresh brackish water. Works just as well in salt water, but maybe you don’t want to wash with that. Really depends on your goals. But washing off the bird Poo is best done with a brush and some water. Not pressure. Comes right off if you use a brush.

Typical mains pressure is between 35 and 50psi but sometimes as high as 60psi. A standard domestic pressure pump on a boat has a pressure switch set to about 40psi and a washdown pump will do about 60psi. So, in short, yes, the pressure is good.
