Crack in front water tank BAVARIA 44 2002

On our yacht-Bavaria 44 2002 we found a crack in the front water tank.

The crack is at the top of the right side.

Questions:

1. What type of plastic is the tank made of?

2. Does anyone in the forum have an attempt to fix this problem?

Cut the top of the tank and put a.flexible tank inside or replace the tank

I had a rather large crack in my black water tank.
I welded it with a hot air gun and strips of plastic.
I pressure tested it after and it works perfect

I would remove the tank if I was doing it, and take it to a proper repair guy with the right plastic non-oxidising anti-flaming welding equipment and get it properly fixed.

It would depend on how much of the boat needs to be ripped apart to remove it. I love my fiberglass tanks. had a crack at the top of my water tank. Repaired in place without much fuss.

I have used DIP IT in a lot of applications. I would never have believed it but it really does work. DIP IT and some strips of rubber then seal that with DIP IT. One inch hole at least 8 inches of coverage.

I had a Bav44 2002 until recently and also found a small crack in the fwd water tank. In my case it was at the very top where there is a re-enforcing 'trough'. it was at one of the top corners of this trough and only came under a small amount of pressure when filling the tank to full and/or when the tank is full and heeling when under sail.


I could not find a glue solution I could be confident of and even welding would have been impossible without removing the tank, not impossible but undesirable, so I fabricated an angled plate from aluminium to fit over the hole/crack with a surrounding cover of about 20-25mm in each direction then used a sealant like plasticine which I could place between the plate and the tank and then screwed (threaded screws with nuts and washers) the plate down onto the tank. Luckily I could reach inside through the inspection cover to put the nuts and washers on.



I am confident it will last but it was only a pin sized hole not a split and the plate should re-enforce the area.


Maybe your situation could be resolved in a similar way.

Your tank is probably made from medium density polyethylene. It should have a symbol of a triangle with the number "2" in it somewhere on the tank. It may have pe100 or pe80 on it instead. I don't know where you are but if you found a major plumbing pipe and fitting supplier they could let you know of a local plastics fabricator who could very quickly repair your tank. This is a simple repair if it's possible to get the tank to a fabricator and probably very reasonable cost wise. The alternative is to get someone out to your boat.
