Compressed Co2 Pressurized Water

In my boat build planning, I've been thinking about plumbing.
The plan for a toilet is compost, so no water needed there,
but the bathroom sink, and the kitchen sink will need some water.

I'd like it to be real simple. One thought is to just use gravity, but that means the heavy water is above not below, so don't like that.
What I'm thinking is using a tank of compressed c02 to pressurized a 5 gallon tank of water under the sink, which could be refilled from a larger tank using compressed c02 to force it into the smaller tank.
I like the idea of no pumps to fail, electric or manual.

I have a soda fountain setup, and this is essentially how it works (but it carbonates too which I don't want). A have 3 of the 5 Gallon Cornelius Kegs,
and a couple aluminum c02 tanks. I'd probably get the lighter carbon fiber tanks to save weight.

My questions are does anyone do this?
How long would 5 gallons last in a kitchen faucet?

Re: Compressed Co2 Pressurized Water

I don't see why it wouldn't work, but it sounds a lot more complicated and expensive than installing a small electric or hand pump.

Rule makes some little submergible electric pumps I've seen used to supply water from a 5 gallon jug to a sink.

You say you don't want carbonated water but you are planning a system to do just that.

Re: Compressed Co2 Pressurized Water

Some quick research shows 5 gallons needs about 24grams of c02 to empty,
so a 10lb bottle of c02 would do 200 tanks of water before needing to be filled.

I have the equipment already as I indicated, but in any case, while it is clearly more expensive than an electric pump in the short term, my understanding and experience is water pumps have short lives.

C02 does not carbonate water with just pressure, it needs a 'carbonator' to do that, a special pump that mixes them together. But maybe in really really rough seas, there might be some carbonation of the water, then again I have a multihull.

If the co2 bottle leaks your going to be up the creek. Just use a whale foot pump. Simple. And spare kit is $22

No, the CO2 will go into solution when you pressurize the vessel the water is in. As a homebrewer for ten years, I can assure you that this is the case. It may not be seltzer water, but it won't be still either.

Got to agree with fsbttms on that.

Yeah, it's probably not a good idea. The safest way to do what he envisons is with SCUBA tanks and pressurized breathing air.

Actually, I take that back. SCUBA tanks are pressurized to very high levels. Not sure how he would step that down to safely push water through the sytem.

Re: Compressed Co2 Pressurized Water

>>Is is possible to use c02 to dispense regular non carbonated water from a keg that is at room temperature?

>> If the water is at room temperature, and you keep the dispensing line short and only apply as much pressure as you need to get water flowing (2-3 psi), there will be almost no carbonation

I said I have a soda fountain. I know exactly how much carbonation it creates without the carbonator. Almost none.

Re: Compressed Co2 Pressurized Water

Well, it's your dime. But a pressurized water tank on a boat is not a soda fountain. And (as mentioned before) a leaky CO2 tank in an enclosed space can be a death sentence.

Bicycle pump? Seems a lot cheaper that a carbon fibre tank, might come in handy if you have a bike on board. But you said you didn't want any pumps, so I got nothin. Whale foot pump works for me everyday all day long FWIW.

Re: Compressed Co2 Pressurized Water

My electric Jabsco VSD pump was installed in 2005 and has been in use full time since that, without any maintenance. It appears the OP needs the artistic approach to boat design

Re: Compressed Co2 Pressurized Water

Solution: buy two water pumps. By the time they fail, you'll be dead.
