CNG Woes

Hello all. Our new to us boat came with CNG instead of Propane. I had a devil of a time finding a source last year but finally did near me in Portsmouth, NH. That marina no longer can provide tank exchanges or fill them, as their supplier, from Rhode Island, quit doing it.

Does anyone know where in the northeast one can get CNG tanks filled or replaced? Otherwise I'll have to switch to propane, which is probably the wise thing to do. If so, has anyone out there done that conversion and can provide insights?

Thanks much

Here is a searchable list: https://afdc.energy.gov/stations/#/find/nearest
The one I use is an unattended station. You will need to make an adapter to fill your tank. It only cost about a dollar to fill a large tank but the adapter you make will cost over $100.

Re: CNG Woes

you should at least consider switching to a propane system. do you have a gas locker that can drain overboard? if so the rest is pretty straightforward.

Re: CNG Woes

Yeah, I probably will. Right now I am looking for time so as not to have to rush or postpone our departure date. But I did finally fine a place to fill the tanks in New Hampshire!
Thanks

Re: CNG Woes

I also live in New England and have always used Corp Brothers in RI - is that the one that has discontinued? What is the one you found in New Hampshire?

Yes, that place in RI has been bought out and the new owners don't want to mess with it, apparently. The place I found is Alternative Vehicle Services Group, and they can fill a small tank for $50 if it's been certified within the last 5 years - like a SCUBA tank.

I don't doubt that. After all it's a gov website.

At the end of last season, I got two CNG tanks from Frank Hall boat yard, 3 Indian point road, Westerly, Rhode island.

Re: CNG Woes

Wow, thankyou for this info - very helpful as I was beginning to panic as I have been using Corp Brothers for over 20 years. I really like CNG and want to stay with it as 1 tank typically lasts 2 to 3 years

Re: CNG Woes

I have a 1990 Hunter legend. I really like the CNG lighter than air and no need for solenoid. Corp brothers was sold, but they supply the marinas. I think Frank Hall gets their gas from the "new" corp brothers. One of the Corp brothers was a sailor, which is why they dealt with CNG. I do not think it is difficult to make the fill adapters for CNG from the natural gas pumps, I am just a fraidy cat, so I prefer to let the professionals do it.
