See above. The idea is that it will last longer and operate better if the diagram doesn't bottom out. so the pressure should be slightly less than the pump cut in pressure.

Still a bit confused....
Do you set the pressure?
Before you turn Pump on
OR
After Pump has shut off

Re: Charging Shureflow accumulator tank

Turn the pump on.
Turn the tap on a little bit.
Listen to the pump switch of & on.
Pump slowly up until the time it restarts each time gets longer & longer.,

PS. I believe there is a model pump now that is best without a tank & basically runs at a constant pressure as long as some water is being used.

Set this pressure before switching the pump on without any water pressure in the system.
There are ways of setting the accumulator up without using pressure gauges which is a good approximation. One method is described just prior to this post. As long as you remember the ideal is for the air pressure to be just below the cut-in pressure of the pump.

Re: Charging Shureflow accumulator tank

If it helps... we have the Jabsco 30573-0000 accumulator tank. The manual is available on the Xylem website. The part about charge pressure says:

TYPICAL INSTALLATION
PRECHARGE PRESSURE ADJUSTMENT
The 30573-0000 tank is precharged at 10 psi (0.7 bar).
If your pump cut-in pressure is significantly different, you
may custom tune the tank to best fit yourparticular
installation. To increase air pressure in tank, shut pump
off, open a faucet to relieve system pressure and adjust
precharge pressure using ordinary tire gauge and tire
pump at valve in end of tank. Pressure should be
checked from time to time. To check tank pressure: turn
off power to water pump, open a faucet to relieve
pressure. Check tank pressure, adjust if necessary.
Close faucet and turn on power to pump.
For best results, do not pressurize tank above 10 psi
(0.7 bar).

The manual doesn't clarify accumulator charge pressure relative to the water pump's cut in/cut out pressure... although it at least hints that the pressure setting should be set relative to cut in.

Our pump cuts at 20 and 40 psi. The pump manual is silent on the topic of accumulators. Experimenting with the accumulator pressure led me (eventually) to leave it at 10.

Air pressure in the accumulator can change if temps change dramatically (although sometimes that seems to be self-correcting as temps return to normal), or if the air bladder ruptures.

Re: Charging Shureflow accumulator tank

Jabsco water pumps cut off around 45 psi, and on around 35 psi. Set the tank around that is close enough. Use any air pump you have with a Guage.

Re: Charging Shureflow accumulator tank

Not that I need to post, but, like "Jeopardy" I know the answer.
carambo46 has it just about right. "Precharge" 2 psi below cut-in pressure. But how do you know what that pressure is if you don't have a pressure gauge. I know I don't. Simple. You need a tire pressure gauge. This will fit over the schrader valve and give you pressure readings. Sooooo, you drain water slowly out of the system until the pump turns on and then you quickly turn off the breaker to the pump so the pump stops (how the hell will you do that!?!) . Measure the air pressure in the tank with the tire gauge. Then drain the water out of the system and add air in the tank until the tire gauge reads approximately 2 to 5 psi below that original turn on pressure that you measured previously. It's not important that the "precharge' (air pressure in tank that has no water) is exactly slightly below the pump pressure switch "cut-in" pressure. It's not necessarily rocket science, unless you want it to be. You've got plenty of leeway, but the precharge must be below the cut-in pressure.

Some may.

Ours cuts in at 20 and out at 40. Some others in the same series cut in at 10 and out at 25.

It's easy enough to find the Jabsco manuals on the Xylem site... so I'd guess Shurflo manuals are find-able, too...
