Changing my bilge pump

Hi all,
I want to change the existing bilge pump (Rule 800 GPH) on my sailboat, I am limited to the height below the flooring, which should not be more than 4.5 inches.
I need a recommendation of a heavy duty water pulp, with 900 GPH or more, and not more than 4.5 inches in height.
I appreciate all your feedback.

Thanks,
Andy

Take a look at the Rule LP900 and the Whale Supersub. Both are good low profile pumps.

Re: Changing my bilge pump

You might consider pairing a diaphragm pump (ie: Jabsco “Par-Max”), or a flexible impeller pump (ie: Jabsco “Puppy”), installed out of the bilge, with a centrifugal pump, in the bilge.
Diaphragm pumps are self-priming, can be run dry without damage, and are better able to push water uphill than centrifugal pumps (higher head). However, they can't move as much water, as a comparable centrifugal pump, and most can't tolerate even small bits of trash or debris (use a pre-strainer).
Flexible Impeller pumps cannot be run dry (for long), but move more water the Diaphragm pumps.
Both Diaphragm & Flexible Impeller pumps are remotely installed, high & dry. The strum box (pre-strainer) is the limiting height factor.

Note that to get a greater flow than your Rule 800 gives you, you will probably need to change to a larger hose and thru-hull fitting. I don’t know of any pump rated for more than 800 gph that uses a 3/4” hose as your a Rule 800:does.

Re: Changing my bilge pump

Isn’t there more height available in the stern near where the rudder (maybe shaft) packing is? I just replaced mine there because it’s where the drips come in. My only concern about it is it uses 0.2 amps every time it runs and it does so automatically. How long before the battery runs out?
