Calorifier?

Hello.
I have an issue with salt water contamination in my fresh water tanks. I have a 100lts tanks in each hull. I drained and refilled both tanks but still have salty water.
A calorifier running from the port engine. The boat is 1996. Could this be a break down in the coils in the tank?
Any suggestions would be most helpful.

Re: Calorifier?

Normally the water heater is operated by coolant from the engine, this is fresh water mixed with a chemical slurry to prevent freezing and corrosion.

If you’re getting salt from here, you’ve had several failures and the water heater is the least of your problems.

Calorifier?

Hi Can you help.
I have salt water contamination in both of my water tanks.9Catamaran with 200 lts tanks) I have drained and refilled, run the engines and again have salt water in the tanks. Could this be issues with the calorifier?
Or do you have any other suggestions.
Thanks in advance.

Re: Calorifier?

Are your engines cooled by seawater in the engine block?

In that case, something would need to be seriously wrong with your engine to get seawater into the water heater. The engine coolant is circulated through the loop in the water heater.

Re: Calorifier?

Your problem in not in your water heater, but some other place.

Since a leak into both tanks is very unlikely, you can start looking in the common parts of the system..

Re: Calorifier?

I worked on all the Gun Boats when they were coming out of production. They all had our watermakers installed on them. All the gun Boats were suffering the same issues. Salt water in the tanks. Of course, Gun Boat was all over us because they were certain that the watermakers were not working properly and sending salty water to the freshwater tanks. Yet every watermaker I checked was working to spec. It turns out that the air vent for the freshwater tanks that are usually close to the water line were introducing salt water to the tanks by forcing it back up through the air vents and into the freshwater tanks. Of course, the Gun Boats were pretty fast and this would make sense. But usually this is not the case on usual cruising boats, but something to consider.
