Bugs in the Air Conditioning

Real bugs, the ones that crawl around.

Cleaned the A/C strainer this morning like we do about every 5 days. There were actural 3/4" bugs in the strainer like the ones I see running around under the docks on the pilings etc. that have what looks like 20 legs. This was quite the shocking surprise for my wife who I had handed the strainer cap to for dumping out and cleaning. She dumped that strainer into the sink like always and those bugs starting running around and I have to give her credit for holding herself together.

The A/C inlet is about 2' below the water surface and this is the 4th time we have been in this marina, 3 of those this time of year and is the first time we ever have a bug problem.

Anyone else have the pleasure of this?

Scolopendra cataracta?


Researchers have identified a new species of centipede, in SE Asia; the first of its species that can swim.
And of course, as with all centipedes, this new species is venomous, though its sting wouldn’t kill you. It would merely leave you in pretty significant pain. Oh, and they can grow up to 20 cm long.

I don't know about irrelevant, but major YUCK! You can probably drown them in fresh water. Put a little oil (cooking oil) in the water, should clog their breathing mechanism.

Extremely worthy post! They will probably be an ongoing factor for the AC drain, although if [there's a way] you inject a little bleach every few days, probably keep it clear of them.

Try putting some bromine tablets in the strainer. Helps keep all sorts of things from clogging up your A/C.
