Bilge pump choice

I had a Jabsco Maxi Puppy 3000 bilge pump until it died a few days ago. I replaced it with a Whale Gulper, like my shower sumps use. I’ve been told that the Whale Gulper is not as good for a bilge pump because it uses a diaphragm instead of an impeller like the Puppy. Does anyone have information about why one of these designs is better for a bilge pump than the other?
