best bench top material for sea going yacht - floor vinyl?

Hi all,

Seeking suggestions for a material to do kitchen bench tops and eating table.

Points to consider. I will be using portable cooking devices (electric frying pan, induction stove top and a multi cooker) hopefully designed with a removable gimbals system. It will be removed and stored when not in use so table can be utilized for other things.

This is for a 25ft big volume coastal cruising trailer yacht with limited space (due to center board / drop keel in cabin.

I an considering Floor vinyl to be a non slip surface.

we used this sort of vinyl floor tile on the bench top on a catamaran we were renovating a few years ago. recall we got the tiles at bunnings

was very successful but don't believe the 'self-adhesive' blurb. add some glue as well (we used liquid nails)

cheers,

You might consider sheet vinyl rather than tiles. You're going to spill stuff.

I've been very happy with pretty faced plywood with multiple coats of varnish as a table. We have more space, so it can be lowered to make a bunk, but usually it is used to spread out the large planning chart.

I'm interested in your portable/storable gimbal system. If you do build it, I hope that you will post pictures.

Hey Chris, were they something like these? If so, how do you think they’d fare on the galley floor?

Funny, that is the same tile we put in alot of our rentals. We are going with better, thicker tile now. And yes, feel free to roll some contact cement before installing. You might like the look of distressed flooring that is 48'x8' that is more durable and gives a better look. You won't need much.

Re: best bench top material for sea going yacht - floor vinyl?

Floor vinyl as a worktop has worked well on our tub. We have it on a bench top used for computers and similar stuff. We also have it on the workshop bench top where it takes a real (literally) hammering. It is easy to clean and does not show up scratches etc.

One small downside is that it has shrunk a little over the decades opening gaps of about a mm or so over a length of 2 m. Not a real problem, but I have put a wood trim around the edges. We used a random mottled pattern rather than a parquet or repetitive linear pattern so non perfect shapes did not pose a visual problem.
In the galley area we decided to use SS sheeting. Not expensive, hygienic, easy to clean, withstands hot pots etc.

yes, that's the stuff although we actually used these ones

https://www.bunnings.com.au/winton-4...-tile_p6600048

i think they would be fine on the galley floor - after all, the floor is what they are really intended for. just be careful to stick down well (don't believe the 'self-stick' !)

btw, when we re-did the floor on our current cat, we used these vinyl planks from carpet court

https://www.karndean.com/en-au/floor...s/wp312-palleo

a bit more upmarket but much more expensive

cheers,

Why wouldn't you use normal kitchen bench laminate - fit for purpose. Loads of YouTube instructions.

Re: best bench top material for sea going yacht - floor vinyl?

personally, i didn't use it because it's a lot harder to cut to fit. boats tend to be weird shapes and laminex comes in larger sheets...

but vinyl is also non-slip when compared to laminex

cheers,

I have Formica on counter and table tops. Wouldn't use it for a sole though.

Re: best bench top material for sea going yacht - floor vinyl?

Thanks Guys for all of your information,

I have used the Bunnings tiles on the floor and they have come up a treat. I will second using some different glue or at least making sure the floor boards are super clean and to leave some weight on them as the peel and stick drys.

My bench top is now done with a piece of floor vinyl also from bunnings (don't have much other choice of suppliers here). Haven't put it use use yet but it's looking good.
Counting the weeks to the day she goes in the water - real soon I hope.....

I think I will be following your approach to the floor, but I have an Italian knockoff of Laminex for the bench tops.

Any chance you could post a photo of the floor?

Tespa if you can get it. It is easy in Netherlands, and Germany, I don't know about other places in the world. It is used on the outside of buildings, as table tops in labs, ad dividers in public toilets/showers etc... Very versatile material, cheap, and completely waterproof.

I have put alot of those tile down. I let them sit in sun and warm up before placing them. I have also put them in the oven on very low to warm them.

Good trick, but I do hope you aired the oven well before you next used it.
