BD50- Keel Cooler- compressor is hot!

I have a BD50 compressor that runs a cooling plate in our ice box. The boat sat for several years before we purchased her and I am currently working thru all the systems. The Ice box was something I did evacuate last year with a pum and guages. Per a couple YT Chanel’s I added R134a to the system at 11psi. I ran the unit for a week but turned it off last year.

Yesterday I started the unit up- the plate wasn’t getting cool and I didn’t have my gauge set- but I did have a can of Freon and added to the system. The unit now is freezing the large plate- it’s drawing right at 7.5 amps but the compressor is freaking hot - 160F-170F.

I’m assuming I overcharged the system and the RPM of the compressor is causing the heat.

I know something isn’t correct.

I have read the BD anp thread several times.

Anything I can do to recheck the system.

Flush Cooling Loop and clean exterior of cooler. Flow a lot of water through loop to assure no air in system.

If you have high temp without significant increase in amp draw it is not compressor load (although I would want to see pressure when charging) it is a lack of heat transfer.

What system do you have? Is it an aluminum evap plate or a holding plate? What rpm are you running and do you have a manual or "smart speed controller?

If this is a capillary system and you are charging it by gauge pressure, I can almost guarantee that you have the charge wrong. You can evaculate it, and charge by weight, if you have the spec, or you can charge by watching the frost line on the evaporator plate. This is time consuming and tedious, but it gets you the right charge every time.
