Any Ideas for Seized Thru-hull

Hi Everyone,

I was checking my thu-hulls over the past weekend and one of them is seized. It's the overboard discharge for the head. I tried lifting it up, pushing it down, and using wrenches and wood blocks for leverage. I stopped because I did not want to tear the thru-hull out and end up sinking the ship. Anyone have any ideas?

Get some P-Blaster and spray and soak for a week. If those grease points open it might help to squirt some there too. DO NOT use any other kind of lubricant (e.g. WD-40) before P-Blaster because other lubricants are much thicker and can stop P-Blaster from penetrating.

If that's a hex or square bolt for the handle that accepts a socket, you might have success with an electric or hydraulic impact driver. If that doesn't work you might need to replace the fitting.

Apply AeroKroil and follow with heat from a MAP gas torch. It'll open right up.

If this is a taper thru hull fitting then there should be a lock nut on the opposite side of the handle. If you can loosen that lock nut then with hammer and a block of wood tape the locknut. That should loosen it up.

Thanks for the quick reply SailFastTri. So, how would I remove any residue from WD40 in the event I already used it.

If the penetrating spray doesn't work, I may just disconnect the hose (not looking forward to that) and leave the thu-hull in place till next fall when I haul out.

Especially since I discovered the head doesn't have a holding tank and only this one overboard discharge. I Think the cheapest way to go is to put in a portable toilet and leave thu-hull (covered and sealed) for a future project.

Yes, loosen the nut on the backside and PB and blowtorch. You should be able to get it moving. It doesn't look that bad. The hose looks rough and should be replaced and double clamped, especially if it's below the waterline.

I found quite a few of the plumbing connections on the boat to be curious to say the least. I wish I had a picture of the way the bilge pump was connected to the gally sink discharge.

You can guess what happened when I connected my new 750gpb bilge pump to remove some standing water this weekend.

Unless you, or someone you know, really knows what they're doing my advise is to haul the boat out before you mess with it. Otherwise a mistake can REALLY be a problem!

i sprayed mine with pb blaster then without force tried to move it--if it still is frozen, have a diver to change it out --can be done in water-- btdt with my ericson...

Pblaster and Kroil are very similar, both outstanding. Kroil you have to mail-order and PBlaster is in the local auto stores, advantage PBlaster if you want it same-day.

Loctite also has a new product on the market, a freeze-release spray. A pentrating lubricant AND freeze spray, designed to work together in the same can. Since it freezes parts down instead of heating them, there's less chance of setting things on fire or detempering them.

I'd sure vote for the PBlaster first. Two or three shots of that, a half hour or hour apart, and even the rock of Gibraltar would come loose.

Hi Everyone!

Just saw your posts. I ended up leaving it as is. The thru Hull was for an overboard head discharge. I removed the head, an the large discharge pipe up till the loop. I'm put in a flushing portable instead.

I'll leave the thruhull till I haul out in the fall. Don't want to risk messing with it and it's not letting in any water. I bought pb blaster for other projects. I also really like it.
