Air in Water Line How? to prime pump

Hello all! first week live aboard. Run out of water. Put in hauled ten gallons, but pump still gurgles. When my pump runs dry in fishing boat,
i take a hose, put it in the live well out flow and prime like that.
SO any simple tricks to prime the boats dc pump?
Thanks, H20 Dan!

Locate the pump so it is lower than the tank.

If the pump is bellow the tank, and bellow the water level in the tank, you might also need to bleed air out of the line to get water to the pump. The ability to do that depends on the type of pump. If it allows water to pass by it, just opening a valve will do it. If not you will need a valve at the pump intake to accomplish it.

If the tank is not above the pump, and the fill port is, run water into the fill until it over flows and then run the pump while it is overflowing.

On my boat, I have to open all the faucets. The first time I filled up with water, I just opened the galley faucet but could not get any water to come through the pump.

After reading the pump manual again, I noticed the mention of opening all the faucets and that did the trick.

Running out of water is common. I'd think the pumps on your boat should be set up to self prime with the closest faucet open. I've never had to prime on my boat.

I find we can get it going by using a shop vac at any downstream opening. Just need to suck on the system hard enough to kick-start it.

Thanks all. After filling other tank it worked. I guess when filling one side, the empty side was supplying the air, ha, duu. Had a feeling about that. Fill both sides dummy. Had to haul the water. Was windy and did not want to get set at the dock. It's ok for me to make dumb little mistakes. I just don't want to make a dangerous one! You ever get that feeling?
