On my other boat I was told by the previous owner that in salt water bromide tablets stop the build up of crap in your system. You put a few every couple of months in the strainer.

Bromide is a good oxidizer biocide, it also will increase corrosion (especially yellow metals).

I doubt that I would ever use myself on my boat by installing in a strainer and leaving it. Might do once in a while for short term if I had some belive that a bio-film had developed in the system.

As a chemical water treater I apply bromide pretty frequently.

I have never heard of putting bromide tablets in a strainer. Perhaps the previous owner meant bromine tablets that are a form of chlorine used to disinfect swimming pool water. I don't see what value they would have in a salt water strainer but there should be no harm either. Cleaning it as needed every couple of months is a good idea.
