Advice on connecting a freshwater pipe

It looks like pex but is most likely Whale. Similar to pex but different diameter and a pex fitting will not seal. The Whale pipes are much stronger than pex for marine applications. Barbs will not work well and under pressure will likely fail. Find the correct Whale fitting and it is just a push on to fix.

Thanks again to all for the advice. Just a followup on this to let you know how it went - the local chandler had whale-style plastic fittings so I have now switched over to those for this line as I wanted to make absolutely sure of no more potential slippage. There's something very satisfying about that click! So far the new setup looks to be working great. We'll give this a spin for a while and if all is good will probably change the rest of the fittings over time.
