Re: Yanmar SD20 Saildrive Oil Seals - Water in Drive

Hi all,
Does anyone knows the dimensions or part numbers of the oil seals abd orings to enable me to buy non-Yanmar alternatives?

Re: Yanmar SD20 Saildrive Oil Seals - Water in Drive

I dont have the dimensions handy, but someone will post. You can use standard automotive oil seals. Once you have the dims (ID, OD, and thickness) you can probably find them at any well stocked auto parts store or a bearings/seals distributor.

The dimesions are also embossed on the outter face of the seals. So you can just pull a seal and take it to the shop with you. This way there is no mistake as it can be double checked pre-purchase. Most shops that sell these items will have a set of calipers on hand to confirm dimensions if none are embossed on your seal.

Oil seals like these are very inexpensive. Yanmar/Volvo sell you the same seals just at a much inflated price. You can buy a handful of them as spares for what one would cost from the brand name distributor.

The same holds true for every seal in your engine.

Re: Yanmar SD20 Saildrive Oil Seals - Water in Drive

Hi belizesailor,
Correct, I am sick of paying overinflated prices for standard parts.

Problem I have is that I am in Perth and my boat is in Turkey......
I was booked on a flight to Turkey in March, but had to cancel because of the global hysteria....
Since I'll be lifting the boat once I can get there, I thought I'd bring the seals with me from Oz.

One potential issue to be aware of is that non oem seals especially water pump">raw water pump, and saildrive seals have a spring. That spring in oem seals is corrosion resistant/ proof. Not always the case in aftermarket springs which I've seen corrode away in less then a year. For something that's immersed in seawater, I'd spend the extra to get oem, unless you could verify or check it with a magnet first.

On the raw water pump seals I replace the spring with an o ring, even so called marine seals can corrode very quickly.

Re: Yanmar SD20 Saildrive Oil Seals - Water in Drive

Hi all,
My brother has a Fusion 40 cat, he has just lifted it to antifoul.

He has SD20, so we opened them and yes, the measurements are 55 x 35 x 0.8.
We went to an automotive shop and found them, HOWEVER... the original one have a s/s spring in them and the body is not magnetic, while the automotive replacement parts are all very magnetic.
Being Sunday here, many suppliers were closed, and it's a public holiday tomorrow too....
I will let you know if we can locate an off-the-shelf a-magnetic replacement.

The big o-rings are 95mm ID and 4.2mm thick.

Good idea about replacing the spring with an o-ring, I will investigate that option. Thanks.

Re: Yanmar SD20 Saildrive Oil Seals - Water in Drive

By all means , if you can’t afford the genuine yanmar seals use conventional automotive seals but remember that this seal replacement requires a haulout , unlike the previously mentioned water pump seal.
Genuine seals ARE different. And they DO cost more than is reasonable.
The Oring idea does work as a replacement but is subject to several variables ie Oring too tight, oring too loose, too inflexible or too fat.
But!
Consider the cost of failure ( another haulout or a saildrive rebuild in worst case) and ask yourself, “do I feel lucky?”
Pete.

Re: Yanmar SD20 Saildrive Oil Seals - Water in Drive

Just as a matter of interest, this is what I got from one of the biggest retailer of oil seals in Oz:

"Hello,
Thank you for your question.
AC2081E are not available in NOK, they informed me it is a genuine only seal.
We can offer you a seal of the same size 35 x 55 x 8 in viton (high temperature material) these seals come with a s/s spring. The cost is $13.20 each.
Please give us a call if you require further information."

So, we can buy a much better seal for about 1/3 to 1/4 of the OEM or 4 standard Nitrile seals + o-rings for about AUD 20.
The local seals/bearing retailer said that many people replace the spring with o-rings and they can supply the right o-ring for those seals.
My brother went for the last option.

Re: Yanmar SD20 Saildrive Oil Seals - Big O-rings

Quote:
The big o-rings are 95mm ID and 4.2mm thick.

The Japanese G-95 O-rings are 94.40 ID and 3.10 cross section
The SAE 2-240 O-rings are 94.84 with a 3.53 cross section .

The ones i just took out have a cross section of 3.5 and about 3.6 after sitting 2 days to relax.

Does anyone know what the Yanmar ones are?
