Yanmar 2GMF transmission

May have to overhaul a transmission off of a 2GMF Yanmar. Anyone know how difficult or expensive it could be? Thanks

No real experience with tranny's, but quite mechanically inclined. Is there a good manual to use for the task?

The Yanmar manual is the best for this. It will require a few special tools including an impact.

To get you in the ballpark, we had the tranny on our boat overhauled in March of this year. Local mechanic that came highly recommended. Total time was just over a week start to finish.

It's a Hurth KBW10E behind a Yanmar 2QM15.

Cost, including new shift cable, turnkey job, was $1,300.00.

To keep us able to go when and where we please, "priceless"........

Thanks for the tip on the manual. I'll look to by one for this boat. Although, the engine is 25 years old, it is clean and runs smooth.

The engine is only rated at 13hp. Does anyone know if you can upgrade the engine to a higher hp, say in the 20 hp arena, and still have it fit in the same size compartment?

I had heard that Mac Boring is the place to get the tranny overhauled at, and it sounds like $1,400 to get the job done.

the 13's can't be increased in power to the 20's
You can replace the engine with a 2GM20F in the same footprint.
If you are in the Mack Boring territory they are a good source for the rebuild. If you are out of their territory, but still in the US. You'll need to find a local dealer or distributor. Yanmar has a strict policy with dealer/distributors on service territory.

It looks like a 2GM20F delivers about 18hp. What does a used(or new) one usually cost?

I'd say about $8000 for a new one but that's just a guess.

The GM series was discontinued in 2006. You will only find used at this time. I'd expect to pay $5000 for a health one and as little as 2000 for a core.

The ‘YM’ Series were designed as an upgrade for the ‘GM’ models. YANMAR Diesel Power - GM/YM Series Marine Engine
