VP 120 Saildrive help needed

Hello I have a VP120 sail drive with the stock gate valve for the cooling water, that's frozen in the open position. I plan to replace that with a ball valve that I can open or close should the need arise.. Has anyone else done that? Does anyone know what size the hole in the saildrive is and what the thread is? VP wants 145.00(!!!) for a ball valve, nipple and hose barb. I know they're proud of their parts, but, I just can't do that...That's insane. I'm hauling in three weeks and planning to do this then. Any help is greatly appreciated

Not sure how much this helps but for a 110 sail drive there's a retrofit kit which essentially is a bog-standard valve, hose barb and a 90-degree adapter.

I _think_ the 110 and 120 saildrives use the same valve. Maybe pull it and bring it with you to the chandler's to find something matching?

Better yet, pull it out, have someone tell you what the threads are (likley to be 1/4" pipe threads) and then go here to find the right replacement. It's a standard industrial valve.

Yes, do use a ball valve. Gate valves are best left to oil refineries, where the gate gets constant lubrication.

Re: VP 120 Saildrive help needed

The saildrive valve #851777 is also used in multiple other applications within the VP world, especially for hot water in/out on numerous engines.

The thread for these inlets & outlets is 1/2 x 14 npsf. (National Pipe Straight Fuel). Normally paired with straight female threads and tapered male threads.

Suggest you use a sealant on the threads ( like the factory does) to avoid dissimilar metal issues. Or, plug the hole and install a remote thru-hull for water feed to the engine, then epoxy putty and fair the holes on the leg.
