Volvo saildrive

I am about to do my annual haulout and want to change the oil in my Volvo Saildrives attached to my MD 22 diesels.

The Volvo manuel recommends Volvo Penta synthetic transmission oil but I am sure I read somewhere that this has been revised to a regular engine oil.

Can someone she'd some light on this for me please.

Re: Volvo saildrive

VP 120s, 120s-b, 120s-c, 120s-d ........all use engine oil CD grade or higher 15w/40 or 20w/30

VP 120s-e use synthetic gear oil.... API GL5/ SAE 75w/90 synthetic

For the 120e, at least, there should be a label on the upper saildrive housing advising the oilspec.

As you can see from Doug's post, which model of SD matters. Which do you have?

To make it more fun, Volvo sometimes changes their recommendations.

Re: Volvo saildrive

Thank you Doug,

I have a 120se on the port side and a 120 ad on the starboard.

Looks like I need different oils for each.

Cheers, Rick
