Volvo Penta saildrive power problem

One of the two Penta MD2030 saildrives on my FP cat isn't delivering full power to the prop, except in reverse it's fine! Anyone else have a similar issue? Troubleshooting suggestions?

Re: Volvo Penta saildrive power problem

MD2030 is the engine designation. If you can, try to find out which saildrive you have. S120, 130, etc are examples

Your cone clutch may be slipping. Before we go there, start by checking the shift linkage and make sure it's fully engaging in forward gear.

Re: Volvo Penta saildrive power problem

What type of oil are you using in the transmission? I had a similar problem with a Volvo ms reverse gear. The forward clutch and failed are the reverse worked great. The failure happened the first couple hundred hours of operation from new. The clutch lining failed use standard Delo engine oil per following Volvo manual recommend practice. I worked with Mobile tech people using their recommendation using oil design for wet clutches. No problems after more than 3500 hours when I sold the boat. Use a oil desiged for wet clutches.

The above is not advice for the S120 saildrives. VP specifies standard engine oil. See the VP manual. I follow the VP manual, my saildrives are 1992 vintage.

If your saildrive is not an S120 then your oil specs may be different. Which is why I asked the question in my earlier post. Again, the MD2030 is the ENGINE, not the saildrive. I have much newer MD2030 engines tied to my original 1992 saildrives, and that's why I am being so specific.

Re: Volvo Penta saildrive power problem

Saildrive is a 130S-A. Linkage works fine. I replaced the fluid, previous owner put in an oil, but the manual required ATF.

My manual specified ATF for the 130S. I changed it out, will see if that helps

the below link is to a discussion about Volvo having changed the spec for the S-drives. You may want to read the linked bulletins. However, if the lubricant change works, it works, na? If it doesn't, look to the cone clutch
