Volvo penta md2030 sail drive oil?

I having a happy hour discussion with a friend who has an MD2030 sail drive. Apparently it currently contains motor oil. I thought these things were supposed to have ATF in them. Am I right? If so, what needs to be done to change it back? Is draining the oil sufficient or should it be flushed? What are the likely consequences of having had oil in it?

More info: I took a walk over to her boat and I am looking at the data plate. The sail drive is a 130S-A. The Volvo specs say ATF and it has 15W40 in it. So what is the drill from here?

Re: Volvo penta md2030 sail drive oil?

Volvo saildrives have different requirements depending on both model and year. They will take either 15W40 motor oil, ATF or 75W90 gear oil.

The 130S-A started life requiring ATF, but these drives suffered clutch plate slippage and damage, so Volvo changed the requirement to 15W40. Volvo released a service bulletin recommending the ATF be changed to 15W40.

It sounds like your friend has the correct oil.

The text of the bulletin:

Volvo Penta Service Bulletin

Group 44-1 Number 85 Version 2 Dated 10-2010, Page 1

Changed oil quality recommendation for S-drives

130S-A, 130S-B, 130SR-A, 130SR-B, 150S-A, 150S-B, 150SR-A, 150SR-B

Volvo Penta has changed the recommendation for oil quality in S-drives.

S-drives manufactured September 2010 onwards will have a sticker with the information “SAE 15 W-40 ONLY” attached in connection to the oil filter. Older drives have a sticker with the text “ATF OIL ONLY.”

Volvo Penta recommends that all S-drives change from ATF oil to engine oil SAE 15W-40 at next oil change.

It is possible to replace oil without laying up the boat, please refer to the Operator’s Manual. However, with this method some ATF oil will remain in the stern drive.

For problems concerning sliding/delayed engagement Volvo Penta recommend change of disk package and replacing the oil with engine oil SAE 15W-40.

Re: Volvo penta md2030 sail drive oil?

Thanks, Mark! Who knew we had a Volvo expert right here in the yard? I never would have caught that, and I had done a search prior to my post without finding it.

Should it be synthetic or a regular mineral oil?

I'm sure you know which boat I am referring to.

Re: Volvo penta md2030 sail drive oil?

I don't know if it makes a difference what type of oil. Personally, I would just put in whatever I was using in my engine, since that makes inventory easier. And I would use mineral for them.

There are several boats here with saildrives - I haven't paid attention to any particular one, so don't know the boat. If it is a 130S-A fitted to a MD2030, then it is a replacement drive and not the original one.
