Stuffing Box Wrenches

I purchased an open ended socket to get to my stuffing box. Fits on my 1/2 inch drive extension.

I made a pair out of 3/8" steel plate when I had a stuffing box. One reason I went over to the PSS, they're are PITA to get to sometimes.

Anyway, these are for sale if anybody wants them. If they're not the right size (2" & 1-7/8") I can modified them to fit.

We just changed to a PSS for that same reason you state. I like a stuffing box that I can see, but to empty the cockpit locker and hang upside down working with one hand and a flashlight in my teeth......I like the new PSS!!

I bought a set of wrenches that looked like that with an adjustment like a cresent wrench at a plumbing supply store.

I had one of those too but it broke the first time I used it. They're all made in china now.

Thanks for the link Delmarrey, looks like a very good system. Too bad they don't list their prices on the website.

I'm going to repack my stuffing box before I put my boat back into the water (it was dripping about once every 3 seconds). The advice I got was to tighten the stuffing box until the drip slowed to about once every minute (any tighter and I would risk damaging the shaft, and possibly losing it).

My question to the forum, is that good advice?

Certainly no tighter.

IMHO, a bit faster drip is preferable.

Note that we're talking about drips when you first launch, or after using the engine. Often, after a boat sits for a few days the leaking will slow or stop due to silt buildup.

There's an easy way to check. As soon as you shut the engine down after motoring at cruising speed, check to see whether the packing gland is too hot to touch. If it is, it needs more flow.

If you like using the traditional stuffing boxes (there's a lot to be said about mechanical devices that have withstood the test of time), you can reduce the dripping significantly without scoring your prop shaft and thereby increasing your rate of drip permanently. I like a relatively dry bilge and finally used some putty-like stuff (I forget the name but you can buy it from Defender or any of the other on-line marine stores). You replace your old flax with new flax but sandwhich the graphite putty between strands of flax. The putty substance both lubricates and seals, so the drips are much, much less without heating up you packing gland too much.
