Standard Cutlass Bearing sizes

Is it me or am I looking in the wrong place..
I have a 1.75 inch shaft and a 2.5 inch stern tube...
Why when I am looking can I only find 1 3/4 inch by 2 5/8 everywhere.
Its not just me there are 3 other boats in the yard with the same problem....
Its a real pain having to skim of the extra brass all the time...
Anybody know who does 1 3/4 by 2 1/2 inch of the shelf... Last time tried thordon but not impressed... Maybe it was the workshops fault leaving expansion room ...... Oh the joys of the hard....

Re: Standard Cutlass Bearing sizes

Are you sure it's an SAE size? It could be 45mm X 65 mm.

If not you can always have a 2-5/8" turned down to size.

Re: Standard Cutlass Bearing sizes

I'm not sure that I'm understanding the question or the geometry of the assembly. Are you saying that you have a 1.75" shaft that is slip fit in a brass bushing that is press fit in a 2.5" tube? Are you then saying that the only replacement bushings that you can find are 1.75" x 2.625"?

If that is the case, I would expect that the replacement bushings are being sold with an oversized OD on purpose. I would think that it would be optimistic to assume that a press fit dimension on a tube in a marine environment would remain within spec's after several years in service. I would expect that in many instances it would be necessary to use a replacement bushing with an oversize OD in order to get the necessary amount of interference in the fit. Skimming the OD of a brass bushing to a precision dimension is a common job at most any machine shop & usually does not cost very much.

If you just want to buy standard 1-3/4 x 2-1/2 bearing tube, it certainly is available.

Re: Standard Cutlass Bearing sizes

Actually, it's cutless, so called because it's designed to avoid damage to the shaft.

Extract from Wikipedia on Stave Bearings

The tradename "Cutless" is used for these rubber bearings and this name has also, along with its misspelling 'Cutlass', become a generic term for them.
