Hi all
Just launched the
boat and spent some days cruising. I found a problem and I wonder if I might find a solution from this learned community.
I changed both cutless bearings on the stern tube (long shaft). The forward one, nearer the
engine, has a connection for
water injection from the
engine. Immediately forward of the bearing is the bellows of the PSS
shaft seal. The shaft seal's static (carbon?) part also has a
water connection, which in my
boat was used for venting. During the first few hours of running I noticed that the shaft got quite hot to the touch. Water was not flowing forward. I opened the seal a few times to fill up the stern tube but it kept emptying after a while.
Not being able to think of anything else, I connected the water injection directly to the
shaft seal and blanked the forward bearing's water inlet. This way the water can only get out from the aft end of the shaft.
The question is: is this correct? I have had no more
heating and no leaking or strange screeching noises, but having limited knowledge I prefer asking.
All the best
