Shaft seal advice

We have a Radice RMTA drive shaft seal on our Yanmar 3gm30f in our Oceanis 36cc.

The boat is the water (saltwater) all year round with all seacocks open to prevent damages
from ice. Click image for larger version

Hope someone will share knowledge and experience on the following

1. Do I need to grease the shaft regularly ?

2. If yes can the grease inlet be used with the boat In the water ?

3. During spring the shaft will leak a couple of drops when the engine is idle with no throttle. Leak will stop with just a slight throttle in idle, in gear moving forward or backward and when water gets warmer later in the season even in idle with no throttle. Is this normal ?

Re: Shaft seal advice

Hi, just installed one, so curous myself...

from the instructions I got it said to put some of the special water based lube in every 6 months from memory. It has two lip seals with the greasing point between them so provided the inner lipseal is not badly damaged (good way to check) lubrication can easily be done in the water.

How old is it? The shaft might also be scored slightly where the lip seals sit.

Mine was quite cheap at about $125 posted to Australia from the UK. The instructions said about 4 year replacement interval from memory.

I used very soft silicon hose into the water feed point to reduce the strain on the hose tail.

How did it cope with the freezing conditions?
