Shaft Packing Gland

I got a new shaft gland style packing box for the boat. I have never had a packing box on my boat, but in my Navy days repacked a lot of pumps and valves. The gland on my new assemble does not fit fully into the box. I only fits around 1/16" into the box to the end of the bevel.

Could be right or is the gland too big?

Re: Shaft Packing Gland

Without the packing it should slide all the way in, like a piston. If the two arrived as a unit, is something missing here, like perhaps the shaft is not the right size for the box?

Re: Shaft Packing Gland

It is just sitting here in the living room. Gland only goes into the box about 1/8" and there isn't any packing in it.

Re: Shaft Packing Gland

Weird I put one of these on last year and had no issues. Is it possible that if you put in the required number of packing glands that you can tighten it adequately?
I agree with tkeithlu, it should slide in easily. Typical image and you can see the gland has slide in farther.

Re: Shaft Packing Gland

How deep is the bore in the box? Is it deep enough for the gland but maybe too small a diameter? Perhaps it's mis-bored. I have this exact style, on mine, with no packing, the gland drops fully in, flange to flange.

Re: Shaft Packing Gland

I am like 99+% sure the problem is that the gland wasn't machined to the correct diameter. No I am waiting the vendor and manufacturer to agree ion this to replace.

Re: Shaft Packing Gland

Sure seems strange, that should slide pretty much all the way in, 1/16" insertion does not sound correct to me.
I've packed those many, many times, the two flanges should damn near be abel to touch each other.

Re: Shaft Packing Gland

I'm wondering if there is problem here, because one part may be metric and the other not ???
These packing glands come in a lot of sizes to accommodate most any shaft.

Maybe there was a screw up at the manufacturing plant...in the store...who knows...??

It's unlikely the bore is incorrect, more likely it's mismatched.

One quick way to find out....measure the inside bore of the gland and the box, see if they are the same ??

Will the gland NOT bottom out?

This type has packing rings in the low part of the box, or will have, thus when its assembled, tightening the gland will push the rings and form the seal around the shaft.
I think it should go further.
See what's stopping it.

I am curious to hear what the vendor says, a mismatch methinks...

Re: Shaft Packing Gland

Well vendor was going to replace it, but they are out of stock and it was going to be 5-6 weeks.

So I figured I would just take to a machine shop to get turned down. But first I got out my good caliper and determined the problem appeared to be that the outside diameter of the gland was correct. But they left a small lip on the edge that was about 0.2mm too much. So I filed it off and the gland fully inserts now!
