SD -20 Repair

Help,
I have an SD-20that has a hole in the bottom of the housing about the size of a dime .
My question is can is be welded ?
Also does any one know where I could find a used one . I have looked all over the internet to no avail.
I am in the process of getting one out of Canada but need another .
New the boat yard is wanting 3200 for each drive
Thanks for any help

Re: sd -20 repair

It takes a skilled welder but can be done, better if its not a load critical spot. I'd be concerned how did the hole occur and are there any other weak spots?

Re: sd -20 repair

Don't know about SD alloys, but assume it is the same as stern drive for an I/O... Which I know to have been successfully welded...

Re: sd -20 repair

If the hole is down by the oil drain area it is a water intake port. Be careful..

Re: sd -20 repair

wow all good points . The holes are probably caused by electrolsis [probably spelled wrong ] could have been lighting . I am having someone check the grounds . Also oil was coming out the hole on the bottom of the sail drive .
the holes are about 3 inches from the prop towards the bow.
I have tried every thing I know to find a second lower unit sail drive and no success any suggestions ?

Re: sd -20 repair

If you have it welded I recommend removing it from the boat and pull the gears out. Otherwise the current can fuze the bearings. I have seen it happen not sure what caused it but it ended badly. Need to find what's causing the corrosion issue

Re: SD -20 Repair

Yanmar still sells them. They are now called the SD25.

I think I remember a recent thread here with someone selling one or two - might want to search.
