Re: Remove Max - Prop. How ?

When marking prior to removal, first feather the prop all the way, either forward or reverse, just note which.

Does removing the prop from the spline upset the blade settings? Do I have to slit the body to remove it ? Surely not !
You can't remove a max intact. You have to pull it apart. The others rightly say that the body comes in two halves that must first be separated and the aft end must be removed. Under all that crud there are some ( 6 or 8 I think ) small bolts locked in place with split pins.

Can you explain your phrase "leg anode" or post a photo ?

I should have added that there does not seem to be any anode in your photo.

Remove Max - Prop. How ?

Pyi will sell you a grease kit, with zirks and grease gun and tube of grease, maybe even 3 hub anodes, and the fasteners. You should grease the prop at least every 2 years, if you believe the manual (available on pyi's site).

Split anodes: I've never seen ones which are not split, the ones you commonly see at Westmarine etc are martyr barrels or collars, they all split. Fit as many as you can on the shaft I suppose (too bad we only have room for one). It's common to have divers replace anodes as they are used up while boat's in water, if it required removing props it would be much more work, and hence more money.

Btw: if all you want to accomplish is replace the zinc, and have room for more than one - just leave the one you have on right now be, and add another. When the old one gets eaten through it will fall off on its own, why bother...

But pyi's in Seattle, not sure what your logistics works out to be.

Re: Remove Max - Prop. How ?

Here are some tips from someone who has removed (and installed) many dozens of Max Props, almost all underwater:

1.- Remove anode
2.- Feather the blades and mark the spinner halve/hub joint
3.- Remove the 6 end cap screws (all screws in this prop are secured by monel cotter pins. You will need to replace them with new ones.)
4.- Remove the end cap, blades and pivot piece as a unit
5.- Wipe out all the grease from spinner halves
6.- Making sure your marks are aligned, determine where the "Y" coordinate is set
7.- Remove the (4 or 6) spinner halve screws
8.- Remove the spinner halves
9.- Remove the cone nut, taking care to note where the "X" coordinate is set
10.- Remove the two prop nut retaining pins
11.- Remove the prop nut (this typically requires a thin-wall socket)
12.- Slide the hub off the saildrive shaft splines

There is no split anode sold for the Volvo SD 120. It is a single piece ring, and yes, the prop must be removed in order to replace the anode.

Using split zincs is much easier than taking off the prop.
How much did PYI want for the rebuild.

Re: Remove Max - Prop. How ?

22" max prop is 4k+, is it really half the price to rebuild it.

Yes there is an anode. My boat has a 130 leg and the anode in the photo can be seen at the face of the leg immediately behind the prop.

OK but my boat in the med has a leg, not a shaft!

Fstbttms
You make the prop removal sound easy! Hope it is.
Re the anode on the leg behind the propeller, I am still keen to get a new anode and make it into a split one?

Re: Remove Max - Prop. How ?

Woops.

My leg is a 120 not 130. My earlier post is wrong. Is there a split anode for a 120. I think not ? And why not !!

Re: Remove Max - Prop. How ?

As I mentioned previously, there is no split anode for the SD120. I don't know why.
