PSS shaft seal plug thread size?
Just bought one and am at work. Dont have it with me and want to order a threaded bolt with washer to go into plug instead of using the vent tube. Dont happen to know the thread size though. Anyone know off the top of their head?

Call PYI. They've always been very helpful, but bear in mind that you will have to burp the seal. Vent tube avoids that.

Mine, a 1” shaft, uses a 1/4-20 thread. Quite possibly the retaining thread size varies with the diameter of the shaft it is sealing.

Thank you! I also have a 1" shaft so i will take a chance. McMaster has the bolts cheap and i need to order from them anyways so figured i could save about $25 -vs- ordering the plug from PSS.

I think you are misunderstanding the question. The op is asking about the high speed option pipe fitting.
It is either 1/8 or 1/4 NPT, not 1/4-20 thread. Probably 1/4 NPT.
Also don't use a stainless steel plug. Find a nylon or PVC one.

Re: PSS shaft seal plug thread size?
[In the States…] on my 1-3/4” shaft size PYI Type A coupling [~20 years old…] the female threads on the carbon stator for the barbed hose fitting are 1/4” NPT [National Pipe Threads]- or at least a male 1/4” NPT barbed fitting threaded right in…
I don’t know if PYI sells metric equivalents.
Another option is to run a hose vertically for a short distance- preferably above the waterline- and top it with a cheap air venting device.[I recommend non-Schrader valve air vents. I use the Watts FV-4M1 for this and coolant loops to the water heater, bus heater, etc.]
In case this helps.
Cheers, Bill

Thanks Bill. Im trying to plug it so i dont have to use the hose, preventing any potential future leaks. There are enough openings on my boat. I dont want to add another, i want to eliminate as many as i can.

Well, the seal material is carbon and electrically conductive so I thought non metallic would be better. If you call PYI they will send you the pipe fitting and it will be nylon. I know PYI now sells a metal version of these fittings but I was under the impression that was to satisfy some military/coast guard use requirement.

Interesting, thanks. Yeah the hose barb fittiing that came with it was nylon. That thought about it being carbon did very quickly cross my mind but i didnt think of it any further. Its certainly easier and cheaper to get a nylon npt plug.

Re: PSS shaft seal plug thread size?
If you use a high quality fuel hose it should last longer than the service interval of the PSS bellows. That hose is the least of my worries on two boats now.
Secure it properly and don't worry about it. Mine goes vertical then comes to an end next to my raw water vented loop. Plenty high and safe.

I assure you- because I replaced the original set screw with a bolt- that the pitch is 1/4 -20. I do recommend a bolt, because the set screw can “cam out”, meaning the hexagonal socket will no longer fit an Allen wrench. I had a merry time getting that out. I recommend using “Never-seize” or other comparable thread lubricant because heads on stainless bolts can twist off- ask me how I know. Grade 8 bolts are stronger than you are, but be sure to use the thread lubricant if you go that way.

Re: PSS shaft seal plug thread size?
Just for additonal info- I installed my PSS shaft seal 14 years ago, and the engine has about 3500 hrs on it. I capped the hose barb off, because I read somewhere that cooling water was only critical for engines turning the shaft speeds found on high-speed power boats. I have no evidence yet that anything is amiss. And one loss hose and connection to cope with.

Re: PSS shaft seal plug thread size?
Ahh, it seems everyone except me is talking about the thread size for the hose barb. I’m talking about ( to no one, apparently) about the thread size for the retaining ring. Scooza, sorry.
