proper wrenches for stuffing box

Can someone help me determine what type of wrench(s) I need to take apart the packing gland nuts? They have "nubs" instead of being nut shaped. Tried to upload a picture - not sure if I am successful or not.

Thanks for any help.

Those are nice nuts. Anything from a pipe wrench to big pliers.

Re: proper wrenches for stuffing box

I would take a punch and tap the base of a nub with a hammer.
Yes there is a wrench made to fit that of course, it looks like a question mark with nubs at the top and bottom of the hook, however there are many like it of different sizes.
Many Yanmar final fuel filters use a smaller version of this wrench, but most people just tap the bottom of a nub with a screwdriver, for your larger likely tighter fasteners, I'd use a punch as its all metal and the plastic handle of a screwdriver likely wont handle the stress.

These will also likely work as they are adjustable for different sizes, Ideally you would want a "hook" though and not a pin

Re: proper wrenches for stuffing box

The way our mechanic taught me... a hammer and a large pair of channel lock pliers or a large pipe wrench. In your photo the set of nubs on the left is the locking nut. Tap (or whack) the side of one of the nubs to loosen the locking nut to the point where it can be turned by hand to back it off a few turns. It's normal for it to seem a little loose or wobbly. Then use the large channel locks or the large pipe wrench to loosen or tighten the right side (larger side). When it is adjusted the way you want, spin the locking nut back into place and tap the side of a nub a few times to snug it down. The advice our mechanic gave was that trying to loosen the locking nut with a large wrench would be frustrating and cause you to question your manliness. His approached has worked well for us.

You'll need four tools: hammer and big screwdriver ( to lose them up), then I found pipe wrenches or large pump pliers do just fine.. One to hold it steady, one to adjust.

You will also need a piece of coathanger wire to get the old flax out.

Appears to take a spanner wrench of some sort, or two? A strap wrench or two might work, easy to come by. If the gland came with the boat, search every nook and cranny, you might get lucky.

There is a proper wrench for this looks like a question mark with a square hook on the end. You can also tap this wrench with a hammer to tighten or loosen. If you use a screwdriver and hammer or pliers you will eventually chew up the soft brass and round off the nut. Try an industrial supply store for the tool it's also used on industrial electric motors

Clearly you need a "nub wrench". Ask your wife (or gf) if she has one in her purse.

I believe you are right on all accounts. Granger's may help if he has a dia. measurement.

They look like fire hydrant and fire hose wrenches. Check with a fire station and see where they get theirs from
