Run you finger around the bottom of the bell housing where the SD meets your engine. If one of the seals is leaking there is a small hole at the bottom of the housing to let it leak out. You should feel the oil and be able to tell if is motor or gear oil.

Why you are having the oil come out along the main water diaphragm is a bit odd I have to say. Where I see the oil in your photo is the flange that presses the main diaphragm down against the inside of the boat to keep the water out.

We just changed both the SD and rear engine seal 1 week ago so if you have any questions just ask.

Re: Main Seal Oil Leak - Why ?

sometime you have old oil sometime clean oil
the engine room was flooded because of a crack in the water hose
the oil in the transmision looks clean

1 i have oil stack under the sail drive, the presion puch the oil back in the boat, in this case the water will fallow !!

2 I have oil bettween the main seal and the secondary seal !!

If you have oil between the 2 diaphragms I would remove the sensor which will allow access to the void between the 2 diaphragms and then use a pump to remove the oil. I would clean the sensor and test it before replacing it. Should not be a big deal if there is some oil residue left, but you should make sure the sensor is working correctly since it is now sitting in oil.

If only oil is coming out, it's probably from between the two diaphragms. Remove that oil and see what happens.

there is some leak around the seal.

but sometime a found clean oil , on my diaphragm !!! this i realy do not understand

i have remouved the sensor, no oil found between the two diaphragm, as far i can go with my tiny tube, but the main leak is at the oposite at the sensor !!, i didn't went as far
but for sure a had oil in it there: the sensor was durty by oil (used one)

i have cleaned again, to see if oil leaking again (four time now, once every two day)
i have to clean the sensor now,and check it
