Re: KBW Transmisson Whining

Are you sure it's the tranny?
Did you check the flex plate while the tranny was out?
Since it's only in forward, how far is the prop from the cutless/strut?
What type of shaft packing do you have?
Does it whine when tied to the dock and under power?
And when did you first notice the whining?

If it is the tranny, you can use a touch stethoscope to listen to which part of the tranny it's coming from.

Re: KBW Transmisson Whining

Whining or howling can be the result of misaligned or improper gear lash. This is usually corrected by shimming under the bearings. This information should be in the shop manual for your transmission. Was the wear pattern on the gears checked when the tranny was apart?

Re: KBW Transmisson Whining

Just wondering if gear lash noise would be heard if the engine has no load? Could I undo the coupling and put the engine into forward and rev to 2K - just to eliminate the cutlass bearing and the dripless seal bearing
