How Does My Prop Fit on The Shaft?!

Silly - but I never thought to inspect before launch. All I do know is that the 1 1/4 inch shaft tapers a bit. I have not checked to day underwater but I have a funny feeling the prop may have fallen off. Can I fit another underwater, or do I need an expensive haul out?! Why did it fall off?! Is there a s/s pin, nut, or something?

Any pointers gratefully received.

Fallen off? there is often 2 nuts and a cotter pin Yes you can replace in the water Done all the time If the prop is gone clean the shaft and key way with a green scrubing pad to remove any groth that may be there Check and see if the key is still there You need that

Re: How Does My Prop Fit on The Shaft?!

John:

The prop fits on the tapered shaft with a matching taper. There is a key and keyway that prevents rotation. It is held on by two nuts and a cotter key. It can be replaced underwater by someone with the proper tools and knowledge.

Here is a good article on proper prop installation: Seaboard Marine - Tony's Tips | Propeller installation / Big Nut vs. Little Nut

There was also a video posted on this forum which showed a prop being removed and replaced underwater. I didn't much like the use of pipe wrenches though.

What makes you think it has come off. It is easy to check, either dive or start engine and put in gear. If there is any wash out the back, your prop is OK. If no wash, them either prop has gone or the keyway has sheared (pretty unlikely).

Prop is attached to the shaft via a taper and keyway. Held on with one or two nuts and (usually) a cotter pin to lock the nut(s).

Water is warming up!

And if it is/was a prop with movable blades (feathering/folding) it is entirely possible that the hub remains but the blades are gone. As a whole it goes on/comes off as described above, but the blades are a separate beast, and their joining to the hub can be very susceptible to electrolysis or vibration.
