How do i remove this ?

Hi there,

I have an interesting part on my prop shaft that i am in need of removing, and I'd like to ask for others advice on possible methods first.

Basic history of my boat is that she is over 40 years old, never been in the water, the guy building her died and i bought her from his estate.

So in this case i don't have any information on how to remove this ring /seal / whatever its called.

On the shaft as you can see in the attached picture, there was a stainless cover ring that had 4 bolts passing through it and the stainless ring / seal around the shaft and these 4 bolts appear to have been fastened to threads inside the P bracket.

Now the interesting thing is that the other 4 holes that are on that stainless rind have threads in them and appear to have bolts from the inside coming half way down the threads.

So my thinking is that that ring must be pulled out, or pushed out from inside, if so then how as from inside would need something over a meter in length?

Basically i want to remove the shaft so that i can insect all its innards as its been sitting around for 40 years and i don't want to damage anything whilst performing maintenance.

If you need any more info, please let me know, other wise thanks in advance for any help that may be offered.

Matthew

Looks like a standard shaft log. Probably has 5200 on the flange and a tight fit for the rest of the way. There is no reason to remove it and you will probably destroy it or warp it when you try to remove and then you have a real problem. Looking at the hole pattern, you could probably rotate and align the outer plate to new set of holes.

If the holes high lighted in red are threaded it looks like the internal bolts are removed and the externals could be used to jack the fitting out. Is this some type of Cutless bearing holder? It is hard to tell from the photo.

Re: How do i remove this ?

Thanks for the relies so far,

i would like to remove it if possible (without breaking it) as the water inlets further up the shaft have had bugs living in them for 40 years and i want to clean and re-lubricate everything.

Plus in my way of thinking it was put in so it must be able to come out.

I have attached another picture showing a view from further out so that it might help you guys help me.

Normally these fittings, do they pull out? or unscrew, or is there no normal procedure.

The stainless fitting in the P bracket does not have any numbers on it, it does have a bush in the center, one of those baker-lite looking ones.

Once again, thanks for you help

I think your going to need to remove the shaft first and then maybe use a slide hammer with a tee end to tap the assembly out...

Re: How do i remove this ?

Thanks for that sailorchic,

it was what i had anticipated doing, i just have to wait untill the shops open on Monday so that i can buy a socket large enough to get the shaft coupler off.

Ideally if the shaft comes out clean and easy and i have clear access right through the shaft for cleaning then that bit can stay in there,

we will see over the next few days

thanks again

Matthew
