Great in reverse poor going forward

I am perplexed. I have an endeavour 43 with a Perkins 4.236. When I engage the transmission in reverse it backs up like a dream, yet when I engage it in forward...even with a large amount of throttle applied I barely move more than a knot or two. The shaft is spinning and the engine is humming. First year with this boat (not evens year yet). Does anyone have any recommendations?

Oh prop is clean and nothing is tangled.

Fixed pitch prop? Autoprop? I’ve seen this with automatic type props where old bearings and a lack of grease result in the blades not reaching proper pitch.

Thank you for the response it’s from a fixed 3 blade prop. I did notice that there appears to be no difference between neautral and forward when shifted. When I’m neutral shaft still spins and when shifter to forward it doesn’t engage another step but revs up the engine in fwd.

Check your cable/linkage. Make sure it is adjusted properly.

If the linkage is selecting forward, but the transmission is not actually entering forward (or only partially), you have a transmission failure.

Check that the forward gear position is fully engaged.

-You can disconnect the cable and manually put it in forward and see if it's not engaging fully.
-I suppose it's possible the key is gone in the shaft and for some reason it is gripping the shaft better in reverse, but that's a "not likely" scenario.
-Transmission issue?

Transmission plates? We experienced similar symptoms in while trying to anchor in Nantucket's crowded harbor years ago. We lost all forward power, but still had reverse due to worn plates on our Hurth gear.

Identify the transmission.
It’s very likely the forward adjustment.
Check your fluid.
Consult your transmission manual.

All good advice above. Maybe check the easy stuff first.

We had an issue with the Hurth tranys (now ZF) a few years ago. Replaced two ZF-10s within a year.

Sad to say that we think that is your problem now, but still check the easy stuff first.

Identify the transmission and get the correct manual for it.

I have an OLD Paragon HJ5 transmission I found a manual for it at a place in the North Eastern US.

I have found after many years of marine equipment, that if it exists someone probably has a manual and in many instances repair parts.

Thanks for you’re help problem resolved. In the event this applies some other poor sap here is the verdict:

Transmission engages in reverse no issues with plenty of power

When shored to neutral the shaft starts spinning the opposite direction and can not be stopped

When shifted to forward the boat barely propels forward

When engine is off with the transmission in neutral I can not spin the shaft freely.

Spoke to a marine transmissions expert and this is a classic case of fused clutch plates. Have to get it rebuilt. Prove for this transmission quoted at $1150. To buy a new one with a $450 core charge plus having to pay shipping would be between $1500 and $1900 (not including shipping). This is for the borg Warner velvet drive 10-17.

Those are good prices. I just had an older BW CR2 rebuilt. Took mine to E-Basic Power on Harke'rs Island near Beaufort. They tore it down in front of me and in a few minutes, recommended a couple of parts beyond the usual kit. They did a great job, and considering some of the CR2 parts are very hard to find, I was a happy customer at $1,300 and change.

Yep time for a rebuild, no idea of prices in the US ,that would be a good price in oz ,almost a sure bet that the cable adjustment has been out for some time, on going adjustment, a must for a long life in these g/boxes,just check engagement every 50 to100 hrs cable adjustment is easy ,cable life in a33morse cable is about1k hrs .⛵️⚓️
